How to remove scratches from glass

When you notice an extra scratch on your eyeglasses, windows, or phone screen, your mood may drop instantly. It's even more annoying if the scratched item is always in front of you. Don't worry and don't give up hope. Small scratches on glass can be repaired, or at least hidden. The specific method will be introduced step by step in this article. Just follow along, and your glass will be smooth and spotless.

Method 1 Sand with toothpaste

1
Wipe the glass clean. Wipe dust and fines off the glass with a clean cloth. Allow the glass to dry before starting to repair scratches.

2
Dampen a microfiber rag. Take a clean, lint-free cloth and dampen it with lukewarm water. Then wring the rag dry until it doesn't drip.
Fines from the rag, such as fluff or dust, can cause uneven stress on the glass surface during sanding, which may result in more scratches.

3
Squeeze a small grain of toothpaste onto a rag. Squeeze a small finger-sized amount of toothpaste onto a rag. Be careful when squeezing toothpaste, as the amount is critical. Even if it's not enough, you can squeeze more later.
White, non-gel toothpaste, especially those with baking soda, is best for removing scratches.

4
Put toothpaste on the glass. Rub the scratched area on the glass with a rag moistened with toothpaste. Rub in small circular motions for about 30 seconds.

5
Squeeze some more toothpaste. Check the wiped glass to see if the scratches are gone. You may need to apply toothpaste a few times to make the scratches smaller. Repeat the above steps, squeeze a small amount of toothpaste onto a rag, and rub it on the glass in a circular motion for 30 seconds.

6
Wipe the glass clean. Find another clean rag, dampen it with water, and wring it out as dry as possible. Rub the area you just wiped again. After wiping, the glass becomes sparkly.
Avoid hard pressing or strokes when wiping off the toothpaste, which can cause the toothpaste to seep into the glass.

Method 2 Sand with baking soda to remove scratches

1

Wipe the glass clean. To avoid fines getting caught in scratches, wipe the glass with a clean microfiber rag. Dampen a rag with lukewarm water and wipe down the glass as usual.

2
Mix equal parts baking soda and water. All you need is less than a tablespoon of water and baking soda. Baking soda and water are best scooped into a bowl, so you can easily break up caked baking soda with a spoon while mixing. The final baking soda paste should be about the consistency of the pudding.

3
Dip a rag in the baking soda paste. As before, you must use a clean rag. Since you only use a small amount of baking soda paste at a time, it is recommended that you wrap your fingers in a rag to dip.

Mione
4
Rub the glass surface in circular motions. Dab the baking soda paste on the glass and rub it back and forth to remove any scratches. The friction time cannot exceed 30 seconds. Finally, check to see if the scratches show signs of disappearing.

5
Rinse the glass. Rinse the glass with water, or wipe it clean with a clean towel. Dip a towel in warm water and wipe the scratched area. You must wipe the baking soda paste clean.

Method 3 Use metal polish

1
Clean the glass. Get a clean microfiber rag and dampen it with lukewarm water. Then wring out the rag until it stops dripping. Use a rag to remove fines and dust from the glass surface and wait for the glass to dry.
Large, delicate surfaces such as windshields are suitable for polishing with metal polish, but with light action.

2
Wrap a microfiber rag around your fingers. Choose a lint-free rag. If you can't find a suitable wipe, cotton balls will do.

Mione
3
Use a rag dipped in polish. You can dip your rag-covered fingers in the polish, or squeeze the polish onto the rag, either way, you only need to use a small amount of polish. The number of polishing agents must be strictly controlled. Using too much will cause more scratches on the glass.
The fastest-acting polish contains uranium oxide. The red iron powder used for polishing jewelry can also be used to remove scratches on the glass, but this iron powder is expensive.

4
Rub the scratches with polish. Use a rag dampened with polish in circular motions over the scratch. Stop checking after 30 seconds. At this point, the scratches should lighten or even disappear completely. Do not continue to use the polish or the glass will be damaged.

5
Wash off the polish. Dampen a clean cloth with lukewarm water and wipe the polished area to completely remove the soaked polish.

Method 4 Remove single scratches with nail polish

1
Clean the glass. As usual, clean the glass with a glass cleaner or a damp microfiber rag. After wiping, there should be no dust and fines on the glass. Then let the glass dry.

2
Dip a brush into a little nail polish. Remove scratches only with clear nail polish. Dip the nail polish with the small brush that comes with the nail polish bottle cap. You just need to cover the scratches with a little nail polish.

Mione
3
Spread the nail polish away. Use a small brush to brush the scratches. The less area the brush has in contact with the glass, the better. Nail polish will run off the brush into the grooves of the scratches, covering up visible imperfections.

Mione
4
Wait 1 hour for the nail polish to dry. Do not touch or move items during this time, and give the polish enough time to soak into the scratches. After an hour, you can start removing the nail polish.

Mione
5
Pour nail polish remover onto a microfiber rag. Hold the mouth of the nail polish remover bottle against a clean rag, and tilt the bottle slowly to allow a small amount of nail polish remover to flow onto the rag. You don't need a lot of nail polish remover, just enough to remove nail polish from the glass.

Mione
6
Wipe scratches with a rag. Use a rag to apply the nail polish remover to the scratches. When all the nail polish has been wiped off, the glass will be as smooth as new.

Notice
When wiping or polishing, you can ask someone to help you hold the glass item in place so it doesn't fall and break.
Some glasses, including some glasses, are coated and scratches cannot be removed using the methods above. You have to remove the coating with a glass etchant like Armour Etch before tackling the scratches.
If you have any doubts about the scratch removal process, contact the manufacturer of the glass product or a professional glass worker.

Warning
Don't wipe the same scratch over and over again. Doing so will damage the glass even more.
Scratches that can tuck into fingernails cannot be treated with the above method. You'd better contact a professional to fix the glass or get a new one.
